Male Envy: The One Question He Never Gets Asked
At some point in nearly every interview, panel, or profile piece, a woman gets asked some version of: "What made you decide to wear that?"
Men, wearing the same suit they wear every single day, don't get asked. Not because their choices aren't noticed — they are — but because a man's wardrobe is assumed to be a non-story. His clothes are a given. Hers are a topic.
It's a small question with a big implication: that a woman's competence and her clothing are somehow linked in a way a man's never is. Ask him about his strategy. Ask her about her outfit.
The frustrating part isn't the question itself — it's what answering it costs. Every time a woman explains her choices, she's spending airtime, credibility, and attention on something that was never asked of the man sitting next to her. He gets the whole interview to talk about the work. She gets some of hers to talk about the blazer.
A bellaBALAS uniform doesn't just solve mornings. It solves this too. When the choice is already made — when it's simply what you wear, the way his suit is simply what he wears — there's less to explain, because there's nothing novel left to ask about.
The goal was never invisibility. It was making the clothes as unremarkable as his — so the only thing left to talk about is the work.
